Celebration of Birth Anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel

The High Commission of India in Ottawa celebrated the National Unity Day commemorating the 143rd birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The event was organised in collaboration with the Gujarati Cultural Association at the Walter Baker Sports Centre, Food Court Area, 100 Malvern Drive, Nepean, Ottawa on 31st October, 2018.

The event began with lighting of lamp by the present dignitaries. High Commissioner Vikas Swarup gave the opening remarks and spoke about the unparalleled contributions of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in the freedom struggle and in making India what it is today. High Commissioner mentioned that it was Sardar Patel's vision that the unity, integrity and sovereignty of independent India have been protected and preserved. Prominent community leaders also paid their tributes to Sardar Patel. Documentary film depicting the life and achievements of Sardar Patel was screened at the event for the audience. Photographs presenting the memorable moments of Sardar Patel's life were also displayed with an exhibition of his prominent quotes. A video on unveiling of Statue of Unity, world's tallest 182 mtrs high bronze plated statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in Gujarat on 31st October 2018 at Kevadia in Narmada district was screened at the event. The statue has been built with highest international standards and has come up with participation of all states of India. Farmers from over 1.69 lakh villages have donated their used farm equipment contributing to 109 metric ton of steel for this project.

The event was graced by many eminent personalities of the Indian diaspora, including presidents of Indo-Canadian community / cultural associations and was attended by over 80 people.
