General Information for Attestation / Legalization of Documents

Documents such as Affidavits, Power of Attorney, Wills, etc. can be attested by the High Commission of India, Ottawa.

Please note all applications for attestation have to be submitted at the respective BLS centres in Montreal and Ottawa and not directly at the High Commission. Applicants can book appointment with BLS (https://www.blsindia-canada.com/) or use Postal/walk-in facility for submission of application for documents requiring attestation of documents.”

Besides Photocopy/X-copy of documents can also be attested. All applicants have to follow  prescribed guidelines for each type of services - fill up the relevant form, enclose the requisite documents and pay the fees.

The High Commission reserves the right to reject attestation of documents, the contents of which are objectionable or contrary to the rules.

Before visiting High Commission, please make sure the documents as prescribed under the “Checklist for Attestation” are complete. All the information provided in the application form, documents must be correct in all respect.

Power of Attorney/Affidavits pertaining to sale, purchase, mortgage, transfer, gift etc. of real estate or movable properties

The Power of Attorney (POA) has to be submitted along with the application form at BLS centres in original along with its photocopy. The applicant is required to affix the photograph, at the end of the subject matter on the documents to be attested, followed by specimen signature below the photograph and signatures with name and address of two witnesses.

Please ensure that the applicant signs on the same page as the main contents of the document.

Commercial Documents

For attestation of commercial documents, the signatures of Notary Public are required to be authenticated and stamped by Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development, Canada (DFATD, Govt. of Canada)at111 Sussex Drive, Ottawa, K1N 1J1. A copy of the passport or any other identification document of the Director of the company is required. An authority letter on behalf of the company is required in case it is submitted by anyone else other than the Director of the company.

C$ 68 + $3 (Consular surcharge) per document.
Total fee : C$ 71/-.

Attestation of Birth Certificate, Marriage Certificate, Death Certificate issued by Canadian Govt.

The documents issued by Canadian Authorities like Birth Certificate, Marriage Certificate, Death Certificate, Education Certificate will only be Attested once they are authenticated and stamped by Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development, Canada (DFATD, Govt. of Canada) at 111 Sussex Drive, Ottawa, K1N 1J1

C$ 14+ $3 (Consular surcharge) per document.
Total fee : C$ 17/-.

Will /Adoption documents:

The Will document is required to be notarized by the Notary Public.                                 
The Adoption document needs to be attested by Notary Public and further authenticated by the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development, Canada (DFATD, Govt. of Canada) at 111 Sussex Drive, Ottawa, K1N 1J1

C$ 27+$3(consular Surcharge) = Total fee : C$ 30/-

Documents issued by Indian Authorities

Birth, Death, Marriage and Educational Certificates etc. issued by the Indian authorities in India can also be attested by the High Commission provided the same have been authenticated by the designated officer of the State Government and validated by the Consular/Attestation Section of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), New Delhi at the address given below or any other agency approved by the Ministry of External Affairs. Note:

  1. Fee reflected above applies to attestation of one document on one application form. If attestation is required on copies of the original document, same fee would be applicable for such service on a separate application form.
  2. If required, High Commission may call the applicant/witnesses for verification of identity or contents of the document requested for attestation.
